With the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, the Chairman has appointed Dan Kornblatt to the position of Vice Chair of Niagara LMSC. Dan will be an advisor to the BOD and will assume an interim Chair role in the event of an emergency. Additionally, he will attend the annual USMS convention if the Chair is unable to do so. This is a new position within the LMSC.

Also with approval from the BOD, Kay Turner has been appointed as the new Sanctions officer. Her responsibilities include reviewing all meet sanction requests and coordinating that process with meet directors so we can provide as many competitive opportunities as possible for our members. Kay is replacing longtime volunteer Amy Johnson. Amy has held a position within the LMSC since 1996 and was this year's Skehan award winner. More details of prior Niagara award winners will be forthcoming in a new section of the website.

Both Dan and Kay have previously held volunteer positions with the LMSC and we thank them for once again stepping up to the starting blocks!

USMS has posted the preliminary results of the Speedo USMS One Hour Postal Championship, held between January 1st and 31st. You can view those by going to this link: http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats12/, scrolling down to the 2012 Postal Championships section, and clicking the different linked files sorted by gender and relays. Several Niagara members competed this year and some broke LMSC records. Congratulations to all competitors!

The 20th annual meet at Canandaigua was a success again this year. The results and record breaking performances are available for viewing on the event page. At the conclusion of the meet, Niagara LMSC held its annual meeting. The meeting minutes will be posted online as soon as they are available. The only officer change is at the position of Chair. Greg Danner was voted in as the new Chair and will continue his roles as the Webmaster, Top Ten Recorder, and Records Chair.

Niagara LMSC is looking for a new Sanctions officer to begin in the fall of 2012 (or as soon as possible). USMS outlines the responsibilities in this document: Sanctions: Job Description and Desired Skills. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please contact the current Sanctions officer, Amy Johnson.

Sadly, we have some more unfortunate news in our area:

Regina Purvis, age 92, passed away on Jan. 21, 2012.  Reggie had suffered several strokes and had been living with her daughter for the past two years.  Up to then, she was active, swimming weekly and attending a senior exercise class. Reggie participated in NYS Empire Games and Senior Games, NYS and National, for many years.  She holds several Niagara District Masters records in the 85-89 age group for back, breast and free events.  Enthusiastic, generous and supportive Regina was a great swim buddy.  Her family included in the death notice that memorials to the USMS, Swimming Saves Lives Foundation are preferred.

Regina made the USMS Top Ten list 28 times dating back to 1995.
