Niagara posted 37 individual swims and 15 relay swims in the USMS Top Ten for the 2018 yards season, including three individual All-Americans (the top time): Dana Gianniny in the 1650 free for women 45-49, Geoff Wells in the 200 breast for men 35-39, and Greg Danner in the 400 IM for men 35-39.

The BUMS 35+ 400 medley relay of Bishop, Wells, Werner, and Klimas was the first AA relay from Niagara in several years.

Other swimmers with Top Ten times are: Wendy Ryan, Dorothy Tourtual, Louise Murray, Stefanena Kysor, Matt Howard, Zack Wahl, Kurt Schwarz, Andrew Schaefer, Eric Stimson, and Craig Travers.

The 2018 UANA Pan American Masters Championships were held in Orlando, Florida at the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center. There were over 1,500 swimmers from North, South, and Central America for this week long event. This was the premier masters championship meet of the summer (USMS did not hold a Summer National Championship meet) and was contested in Long Course Meters (50m). Swimmers in attendance from Niagara LMSC:

  • Binghamton University Masters (BUMS) had three: Randy Mayall (men 50-54), Melissa Schafer (women 35-39), and Geoff Wells (men 35-39).
  • Nickel City Splash Swim Team (NICK) was represented by Mary Colby, in the women's 40-44 division.
  • Fairport Area Swim Team Masters (FAIR) was represented by Brendan Danner (men 35-39).
  • There were two unattached swimmers from Niagara: Zack Wahl (men 25-29) and Michael McNelis (men 40-44).

Geoff Wells was top ten in all five of his races, including two gold medals (200 breast and 200 IM) and two silvers (50 back and 50 breast). He broke the Championship Meet Record in the 200 breast, the Niagara record in the 50 back, as well as his own Niagara records in the 50 and 200 breast. Randy Mayall finished in the top ten in all five of his races, including a bronze medal in the 800 meter free. Additionally, Randy broke the Niagara LMSC record in all five events! Zack Wahl took silver in the 100 fly for his age group, top ten in his other two races (50 fly and 100 free), and broke the Niagara records in all three! Melissa recorded top ten finishes in all four of her races, highlighted by a silver medal in the 200 meter free. Mary Colby had two top ten finishes (5th in the 100 back and 6th in the 200 back). Michael McNelis placed in the top ten for three of his races (50/100 breast and 200 fly), highlighted with a 7th place finish in the 200 fly that broke his own Niagara record. Brendan Danner placed 10th in both of his races: 50 and 100 breast.

U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS Adult Learn To Swim (ALTS) instructor certification course on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, in Buffalo, NY, in conjunction with the Nickel City Splash Masters Swim Team. This class is considered tentative pending minimum enrollment.

The event runs from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM at the University at Buffalo.

Event: 2018 SmartyPants Vitamins USMS Summer Fitness Challenge 2K Swim. Hosted by Fairport Area Swim Team Masters (FAIR).

Who: Open to all adult swimmers registered with U.S. Masters Swimming

Why: Net proceeds go to the USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, which raises awareness about the problem of adult drowning and serves as a financial and educational resource for programs that provide adult learn-to-swim lessons. Additional donations beyond the entry fee ($10 pre-July 1, $12 after) are encouraged and available during the online registration process.

What: Swim a 2,000-yard workout (lanes will be offered with different sets, e.g. 40 x 50, 20 x 100, etc.)

Where: Fairport High School: 1 Dave Paddock Way, Fairport, NY 14450. Park in the back (Lot D) and enter the building through the Events Entrance.

When: Wednesday, July 25 from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm (if you can’t join us, you can still register and swim it by yourself to support a great cause!)

Out of 247 "local" clubs represented at USMS Short Course Nationals, the BUMS squad of 18 members came in 27th place overall, led by their top scorers: Geoff Wells (two golds and one silver), Wendy Ryan (three silvers and one bronze), and Molly Brown (one bronze). Fairport Area Swim Team Masters had two members that scored enough to place 60th as a team: Greg Danner (one gold, two silvers, one bronze) and Kurt Schwarz (one silver). The RAMS club (ROCH) came in 99th with one scorer: Dana Gianniny with two golds and one bronze. Craig Travers (one bronze) swam Unattached for Niagara. There were numerous top ten finishes by Niagara swimmers and several Niagara records were broken! 

This meet was held at the famous IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, site of multiple Olympic Trials. They had just completed a $20m renovation of the facility, which resulted in a fantastic experience for all of the swimmers!
