A total of 16 Binghamton University Masters Swimmers represented the Niagara LMSC at the LCM Nationals held at the University of Maryland 8/13-17.  Several of the swimmers had to leave during the meet's 5 day format so most were kept quite busy swimming both individual and relay events, which are a lot of fun. Our combined 10th place finish in the 144 member club division attested to the fast swims. Finishing just 6 points ahead of the 11th place team meant each swim on Sunday and every point earned in the 10 place scoring was critical. Masters Swimming is not just about the fastest swimmers, but having everyone contribute; even one point is important. At these big end of the season meets, Masters is also a team sport.

Top finishers were Chris Bishop,42 from  Bing., 1st 50m Back, 1st 100m Back, 3rd  200m Free & 3rd 200m Back; Dave Werner 36 from Bing., 1st 100m Fly, 1st 50m Fly, 2nd 50m Breast, 2nd 100m Breast & 3rd 100m Free; Rebecca Smith 37 from Vestal, 2nd 50m Free, 2nd 100m Free, 2nd 50m Back & 2nd 100m Back; Andy Schaefer 31 from Bing., 2nd 1,500m Free; Laura Bishop 42 from Bing.,2nd 50m Free & 3rd 400m Free; Scott Henkel 40 fromBing., 2nd 800m Free & 3rd 400m Free; Dan Kornblatt 65 from Whitney Point, 3rd 100m Back & 3rd 200m Back; Dorothy Tourtual 63 from Endicott, 3rd 1,500m Free. The BUMS had two first place relays. The 200m Mixed Free Relay of  Rebecca Smith, Randy Mayall 48 from Rochester, Laura Bishop & Dave Werner. The same team make up was 1st in the 200m Mixed Medley Relay.

FINA World Masters Championships PDF Print E-mail

The 15th FINA World Masters Championships in Montreal concluded on Sunday. There were nearly 6,000 swimmers registered for this competition.

Results can be found at the following link: https://finamasters2014.org/swimming-results/. USMS will add member results into the Event Rankings database in the near future.

We know of a few Niagara swimmers who attended the competition, but as the results are not in a friendly searchable format, there might be others (let us know if you swam!). A few highlights:

Geoff Wells, from Syracuse and representing the BUMS, claimed gold in the Men's 30-34 100m breaststroke and silver in the 50m breast. Both times lowered his Niagara LMSC records set earlier in the summer. He finished in the top ten in each of his five events. Also, Geoff broke the Colonies Zone records in the 50 and 100 LCM breast.

Greg Danner, from Rochester and representing the BUMS, took bronze in the Men's 30-34 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly. He lowered his Niagara LMSC records in the 200m I.M. as well as the 50m butterfly. He finished in the top six in each of his five events.

Kim Skomra, representing Nickel City Splash, broke four Niagara LMSC records in the Women's 50-54 group: the 50m and 100m backstroke, as well as the 100m and 200m freestyle. Her 200m freestyle finish was good for 17th place.

John Simm, representing Niagara, placed 21st in the Men's 50 and 100m backstroke, age 55-59 category. He lowered his Niagara LMSC record in the 100m back and narrowly missed the 50m back record.

Andre Cropper, representing the ADC Dolphins, had his best finish in 33rd place in the Men's 50-54 200m freestyle.

Although the FINA World Masters Championships are typically held every two years, the 16th Championships will take place again in 2015, in Kazan, Russia because it will follow the World Championships (non-Masters). It will then resume the frequency every two years (with 2017 being in Guadalajara, Mexico).

Cortland meet results PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 June 2014 20:42

Meet results for both the Empire State Senior Games (SCY) and the Long Course meet have been posted to the Results section. They have also been uploaded to the USMS Event Results Database.

Due to improper timing procedures at the LCM meet, all of the 50's (fly, back, breast, and free) are unofficial times and the results are Exhibition. We want to give a special thank you to swimmer Carol Belva for stepping in and performing referee duties since some of the scheduled officials did not show up. Without her, the entirety of the meet would have been invalidated. Though she officiated almost the whole meet, the two heats of the events that she did swim in (400 free and 400 IM) were short one official and similarly are marked for Exhibition. The LMSC apologizes for any inconvenience and will be working with the meet host to ensure that this does not occur again, should they choose to host again in the future.

Please note, you have until July 8th to enter the Ithaca LCM meet, which will be held on Saturday, July 12th.

Also, the last day for online meet entry for the 2014 USMS Summer National Championship (from Aug 13-17 at the University of Maryland) is July 9th. http://www.usms.org/comp/lcnats14/.

One last announcement: we have surpassed 600 members in Niagara for the first time in our history! Thank you for joining and please let us know if we can make your experience better!
