The annual USMS Convention wrapped up in Florida last weekend. A new promotional video was released:
Several new officers were appointed to the Board of Directors. Most notably, Nadine Day succeeds Jeff Moxie as the President. Nadine was previously the VP of Community Services, which will now be filled by Jody Smith.
You can read more about national appointments at this link, plus the winners of national awards.
The Swimming Saves Lives Foundation was one highlight of the Convention. The program uses USMS resources to teach children and adults how to swim. This aims to prevent drowning and promote the lifelong benefits of swimming. We encourage our members to contribute.
The National meets next year are in Greensboro, NC (SCY April 26-29) and Omaha, NE (LCM July 5-8). Complete meet information has not yet been released, but some details are available at usms.org. The meets will be added to our calendar as more info comes out.
So far, there are no bids for 2011 SCM Zone Championships, which are typically hosted in December. Ithaca College has a brand new facility and continues to host their December meet, so we should have good attendance at that competition.
Nazareth College will be hosting a meet on Sunday, October 9th at the Otto Shults Community Center on campus in Rochester, NY. This is a great opportunity because we don't regularly hold Short Course Meters events in the area. Since the SCM format is not very common in age group and college swimming, this might be your chance to get some lifetime bests! Many of the participants will break Niagara records and surely there will be some USMS Top Ten swims as well.
Terrapin Masters Swim Club out of the Potomac Valley LMSC is running the 7th Annual Terrapin Cup at the University of Maryland on August 20th and 21st. Entries are due by August 15th. This is an 8 lane 50 meter pool, with a separate 25 yard pool for continuous warm-up and cool-down.

Anyone interested in learning more about how high level USMS swimmers train should definitely check out the blogs.
Leslie (aka The Fortress) posts her daily workouts and they tend to be sprinter oriented. Her blog can be viewed at this link: The FAF AFAP Digest.
Chris also posts his daily workouts, which have a good mix of stroke and middle distance work. Chris' training journal can be viewed by registered members of the USMS discussion forum community. Registration is free.
The Colonies Zone Open Water Championship will be the 2.5k event at the Lake George Open Water Swim on August 27th. 5k and 10k events are also available, with the 10k being held on the following day (Sunday, the 28th). Registration closes August 22nd.
