If you plan on competing in a 3000 or 6000 yard postal (click here for the entry form) and you want to be considered for a relay, please contact our Postal chair. The relay fees are covered by Niagara and you could be a member of a record setting or nationally placing relay.

If you are interested in swimming a postal, but you are looking for the proper venue, also contact the Postal chair. It is possible that a meet will be run in the future for a postal event.

LCM Top Ten 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:19

The Long Course Meters season for 2010 concluded on September 30th. There were no LCM meets within the Niagara LMSC, so we have not prepared a Top Ten submission for USMS. However, if you swam in a LCM meet outside of Niagara and think you have made Top Ten (refer to the Event Rankings on USMS.org), please let us know so we can send USMS the necessary information. The submission deadline is October 20th.

Dana Gianniny has completed her time as the Top Ten recorder and passed the role on to Greg Danner. On behalf of Niagara LMSC we thank Dana for her service; be sure to thank her on the pool deck! If you have any Top Ten questions, please contact Greg.

Nancy Schoepperle passed away July 15, 2010 after several years of failing health. You may best remember Nancy as a petite backstroker. Small in body but big in heart, Nancy holds many Niagara District records for backstroke in the 65-69, 70-74, and 75-79 age groups. She made Top Ten in 1993, 1996, 2002, and 2006 and was always up for a meet (she claimed to taper while driving to the venue). Nancy competed in several Nationals and the V FINA World Masters 1994 in Montreal. She was a regular competitor in the Empire State Games usually accompanied by her daughter Susan Webster of Old Forge, NY. Nancy was also a synchronized swimmer and an original member of the Huff & Puffs, a club begun in the 1970’s by Jayne Morris at the Buffalo Jewish Community Center. The club is now the Buffalo Synchro Masters. Nancy competed and used her piano/music training to select and cut the music tapes for the team. Her last synchro competition was the 2002 Masters Nationals at Keuka College.

Gianniny nearly beats Brophy! PDF Print E-mail

Niagara District was well represented in mid August when our contingent ventured north to Lake Placid’s Mirror Lake to compete in the annual Betsy Owens Memorial 1 and 2 mile cable swims. With one more chance to wear the infamous and now banned tech suits three individual and two relay records were established by Niagara swimmers.

Contrary to the chaos of some open water swims where more than a thousand swimmers start simultaneously in a thrashing sea of elbows and kicking feet, at the Betsy Owens heats of 10 are started at interval. There is much more order and manner as the swimmers negotiate the course marked by a submerged and suspended cable; hence the name “cable swim”.

District president Neil Brophy captured the 1st place posicle stick, winning the one mile, two lap event, ahead of fellow Niagarites Dana (2nd) and Bruce (3rd) Gianniny. All three lowered existing national records.
