Swimmer gives back—and gets recognized!

Members of U.S. Masters Swimming don’t just confine their participation to the pool. There are many volunteer opportunities for their talent, expertise, and generosity. USMS recognizes the commitment of those who give back with the Dorothy Donnelly Service Award, honoring one of USMS's outstanding volunteers. The award recognizes those whose contributions stand out in service to local, regional, and national programs. Up to 15 people are selected each year with nominations coming from Local Masters Swimming Committees, clubs, and individuals.

Dan Kornblatt has devoted inordinate efforts to the success of his team, the Binghamton University Masters Swimming (BUMS) while also engaging generously at all levels of U.S. Masters Swimming. In 1984 Dan was one of the founding members of the BUMS and soon took on the role of President. Over the next three decades, Dan was the bond that held the club together as it experienced at least 14 coach changes. Dan took charge of all team administrative functions, working silently and tirelessly to propel the BUMS success.

Dan networked extensively within the Niagara Local Masters Swimming Committee (LMSC) to promote meets and to learn from other coaches how to grow the BUMS. For 30 years, Dan was the Director for the BUMS annual meet. Each year he gave competitive opportunities to hundreds of swimmers and often sacrificed his own competitive participation in order to handle the club duties.

In 2011, Dan became head coach. The team accomplished the goals he set, winning the Small Team Division at the Colonies Zone SCY Championships in 2011 and the Large Team Division in 2012 and 2014. In 2013, the team placed 6th at U.S Masters Swimming Spring National Championships. Dan continued to grow the team by actively recruiting tri-athletes and distance swimmers.

In a small community, with limited pool time, Dan built the most successful program in the history of Niagara LMSC. He has coached National and Colonies Zone Champions to dozens of Niagara LMSC records.

Within the Niagara Local Masters Swimming Committee (LMSC) Dan has been a long time Member of the Board. He served as its Chairperson from 2000 to 2004, Vice Chair from 2012-2014, and, as the member of the Competition Committee, charged with providing more meets. In his role as Vice Chair he was an invaluable resource for the new Chair, providing advice and historical insight. It is safe to say that the Niagara LMSC would not be achieving its all-time high membership and meet participation without Dan’s 30 years of service.

Dan is the third recipient of this national award as a Niagara LMSC member, joining George McVey (2012) and Gene Donner (1997).

Several Niagara clubs made the trip to Summer Nationals at the SPIRE Institute in Ohio. Buffalo Area Masters Swimming, Binghamton University Masters, Nickel City Splash Swim Team, and Rochester Area Masters Swimming had swimmers compete.

BUMS members Rebecca Smith (W35-39 50 free and 100 back) and Ryan Marchant (M25-29 200 fly) were individual National champions. Their men's 160-199 200 medley relay and mixed 160-199 200 free relay were also champs.

Stefanena Kysor (W85-89), representing Niagara, was the National champ in the 100 back and 50 breast.

Many other Niagara swimmers had top ten finishes and broke LMSC records, which we will  be sure to highlight as soon as we get a chance to go through all the swims.

The BUMS team score put them in 4th place out of 153 clubs! BUFF was 81st with just two swimmers, and the RAMS were 111th with only Dana Gianniny (four top 10 finishes).

Full results are linked in our Results section.

Great job everyone!
