The Nazareth College SCM meet results have been posted to our Results area and uploaded to USMS. A review of results shows that 12 Niagara records were broken. Congrats! The records will be updated when the SCM season is complete.

You can track your national ranking in an event throughout the year by accessing the USMS Meet Results Database Rankings. Rankings are not official until the completion of the season and the final Top Ten list is issued by USMS. That brings us to the final Top Ten lists for the SCY 2011 season...

Ten swimmers made the USMS Top Ten for SCY 2011 in 27 events. Here are those ten swimmers, ordered by age:

  • Leah Matthews
  • Greg Danner

USMS Convention PDF Print E-mail

The annual USMS Convention wrapped up in Florida last weekend. A new promotional video was released:

Several new officers were appointed to the Board of Directors. Most notably, Nadine Day succeeds Jeff Moxie as the President. Nadine was previously the VP of Community Services, which will now be filled by Jody Smith.

You can read more about national appointments at this link, plus the winners of national awards.

The Swimming Saves Lives Foundation was one highlight of the Convention. The program uses USMS resources to teach children and adults how to swim. This aims to prevent drowning and promote the lifelong benefits of swimming. We encourage our members to contribute.

The National meets next year are in Greensboro, NC (SCY April 26-29) and Omaha, NE (LCM July 5-8). Complete meet information has not yet been released, but some details are available at The meets will be added to our calendar as more info comes out.

So far, there are no bids for 2011 SCM Zone Championships, which are typically hosted in December. Ithaca College has a brand new facility and continues to host their December meet, so we should have good attendance at that competition.

Nazareth College will be hosting a meet on Sunday, October 9th at the Otto Shults Community Center on campus in Rochester, NY. This is a great opportunity because we don't regularly hold Short Course Meters events in the area. Since the SCM format is not very common in age group and college swimming, this might be your chance to get some lifetime bests! Many of the participants will break Niagara records and surely there will be some USMS Top Ten swims as well.

UMD is a great facility that has regularly hosted USMS Colonies Zone Championships and has previously hosted high level competitions such as USA Swimming National Championships in the summer of 2004.

USMS Summer Nationals recap:

Although there were no Niagara swimmers at the meet, there were many highlights of the meet.

2011 FINA World Championships gold medalist Mark Gangloff returned from China and swam the 50 meter breaststroke in a time of :27.96 to claim the Men's 25-29 World Record.

Two active members of the USMS blogging community set World Records as well:

  • Leslie Livingston went a :32.55 in the Women's 50-54 50 LCM Backstroke.
  • Chris Stevenson went a 2:15.83 in the Men's 45-49 LCM Backstroke.

Anyone interested in learning more about how high level USMS swimmers train should definitely check out the blogs.

Leslie (aka The Fortress) posts her daily workouts and they tend to be sprinter oriented. Her blog can be viewed at this link: The FAF AFAP Digest.

Chris also posts his daily workouts, which have a good mix of stroke and middle distance work. Chris' training journal can be viewed by registered members of the USMS discussion forum community. Registration is free.
